I am theGreen Party candidate for Congress from Michigan's 5th District. If elected, I will not be afraid to appropriate money to make this a better country; and I would not be afraid to tax upper income groups to pay for these improvements. This is a great country but it can be made even better by investing money in our people. We need to improve our Education and Health Care Programs.
My view is that it is government’s job to spend money to solve problems. The problem we have is not enough living wage jobs. We need to guarantee a job paying at least $15/hr. to everyone in this country. The private sector is eliminating jobs with increased automation but there are still many things which need to be done. We could employ million of people by giving our roads, schools, libraries, and parks the attention they deserve. Millions of new government jobs might create high inflation if taxes are not increased, but we don’t want to increase taxes on people making $15/hr
We need more renewable energy investment but we need to pay more attention to conservation. One of the best ways we can improve our environment and cut energy use would be to redesign and rebuild our cities. People living closer together use less energy. Public transportation becomes a viable option. Cities can be made nice places to live but it will take public investment in public services.
Our for profit health care system is costing us too much. Too much of the money spent on health care ends up in the hands of just a few insurance and drug company executives. Too much is spent on unnecessary tests and procedures. Not enough is spent on preventive medicine. Medicare has been a successful health care program for the elderly and it is helping to cut health care costs. We need to improve Medicare and expand it to cover everyone. We need a government run health care system that is run for the benefit of everyone not just to profit a few executives.
